This fund was focussed on empowering future generations of young women through spotlighting the legacies of those who have gone before. In this case, an advisory panel, consisting of female leaders, including Mana Whenua representation, shortlisted a roll call of incredible wāhine toa from the city's (and wider region's) history. Eventually five women were selected to be included in the mural, each representing the achievement of significant milestones for wāhine and for having made significant change within our communities.
The women featured in the mural include singer, broadcaster and champion for Māori culture and language, Airini Nga Roimata Grennell, award winning writer and activist in feminism, social justice and peace movements Elsie Locke, prominent activist in the fields of Māori welfare and health Erihapeti Rehu-Murchie, conservationist and leader in Ngāi Tahu Wharetutu Te Aroha Stirling, and paraplegic Olympic archer who won Commonwealth Games Gold competing against able bodied competitors Neroli Fairhall.
The artists explained their design as such: "Our concept was firstly informed by Mana Whenua. Our design direction began by wanting to highlight each wāhine and their own stories and have them placed within Patiki to form kāhui whetū (a constellation or cluster of stars). In doing this, they all have their own space and mana. The central image is grounding and reflects the connection to the wāhine on the pae. The central wāhine's glance (Airini Grennell Gopas) is directly towards the audience and gives a sense of strong visual indication of a glare and watching you approach the wall. The use of niho taniwha (the triangle shapes) are used to symbolize connection of people and community. The patiki (diamond shapes) can be used (depending on iwi) for abundance. So we used this to symbolize the wāhine leaving such a large legacy and leaving so much to future generations. The use of colours was important with the inner patiki being a bright colour to highlight each legacy and symbolize the brightness of the stars and remembrance to those who have passed."
The mural was fittingly unveiled and blessed on the occasion of the 130th Anniversary of Women's Suffrage in Aotearoa.
A shining legacy for the future that pays tribute to our past, this meaningful addition to our city was supported by Watch This Space, ChristchurchNZ, the Christchurch Foundation and more.
[562, 473
A collaboration between Asume and Chile in a popular spot in the central city.
