The crew was asked to produce a Welcome to New Brighton mural that involved the community, as the concept was developed it was agreed to use the te reo Māori name for the area of New Brighton and the wetlands around QEII: Ōrua Paeroa. The organisers of the NBOAF posted an explanation of the name on their social media: "The name Ōrua paeroa has been known to refer to both the area of New Brighton and Travis Wetlands. Ōrua paeroa was known as the place where strong east winds blew in from the sea. New Brighton and Te Ihutai/the Avon-Heathcote Estuary have considerable cultural and historical importance for Ngāi Tahu and Ngāi Tūāhuriri. It has been a place of settlement and use – in particular, for mahinga kai purposes – for the people of Ngāi Tahu for over 600 years. During the warmer months, Ōrua paeroa was a popular site for Māori to swim. The name is also applied to both a beach nearby where patiki (flounder), patiki rore (sole) and shellfish were gathered and to the general location of the New Brighton town centre.
The Ōrua paeroa Travis Wetlands is an area of swamp known at one time to link with the sea. Ngāi Tahu traditions talk of makō/sharks or pioke/rigsharks being caught here at certain times of the year, during periods when the swamp would connect to the sea and marine fish could be supported when saltwater inundated the freshwater swamp.The pā, known as Te Kai a te Karoro, was an early Waitaha and Ngāti Mamoe village located on the sandpit near present day South New Brighton Park. The margin of the Estuary and the mouths of the Ōtākaro/Avon and Ōpāwaho/Heathcote rivers which flow into it, were important mahinga kai areas.
Historically, Te Karoro Karoro – translating to mean ‘the cries of seagulls’ – was a wetland and dune environment covered in pātiti (native grass), wīwī (rushes), eelgrass and scrub.
The area supported an abundance of wildlife and was an important food and resource gathering area for Ngāi Tahu/Ngāi Tūāhuriri. The spit was formed after World War II, from sand carried to the coast by the Rakahuri/Ashley and Waimakariri Rivers, where it was dispersed along the foreshore by sea currents, eventually building up to enclose Te Ihutai. Te Ihutai was a significant fishery for Ngāi Tahu whānui, the manawhenua of Ngāi Tūahuriri and the travellers who voyaged along the eastern coast. The estuary was renowned for its diverse – and regularly in abundance – variety of fish, shellfish and birds. (Segments above have been taken from the Matapopore Cultural Design Strategy: ŌRUA PAEROA.)"
The work engaged with the New Brighton community by inviting people to help paint the blocks of colour inside the letters that had been gridded out by the Fiksate crew. Known as one of the earliest locations offering Saturday trade in Aotearoa, it was a popular spot, famed for its collection of shops, the fresh sea air, the 'Noddy' train and the colourful bollards that spread throughout the space.
These bollards, large cylindrical sculptural pieces in primary colours emerging from the ground and adorned with a retro-styled font reading BRIGHTON MALL, were iconic pieces of public art. Today, the mall looks very different, weathered and undergoing change, quieter and no longer the destination it once was for many - the bollards themselves now vanished as well - symptomatic of the change. Rumours abound that they are now housed in a lock up yard somewhere.
Ghostcat's tiny versions of the bollards are a symbolic gesture - a resonant memory, but also a sign of hope for renewal. Organiser Gavin Fantastic had always envisaged the festival as, in part, a way to change perceptions around graffiti art, and this wall brought together a number of artists to produced traditional graffiti pieces in a shared colour palette. In doing so, the letter-form focus of graffiti was celebrated (as were accompanying character works, a long feature of graffiti culture) and re-considered as a form of legal public art. The styles ranged from more simplified, legible names to almost indecipherable wildstyles, representative of the cacophony of voices evident across the stretching wall.
Artist featured included: Ysek_7, Morepork, Lurq, Ikarus, Pesto, Weks, Tepid, Dove, Sewer, Dofus, Dozer, Drows, Wager, and Vesil.
artwork/Ikarus_NewBrighton_SisterEvie_lchan.jpg.10000x10000_q85_box-567,124,4716,2687_crop_detail.jpg
[357
67

]}},
[112
112
Painted by Pops, the poem on the right is composed by New Brighton resident ‘Sister’ Evie, and is an ode to the survival of the communities of Christchurch in the wake if the earthquakes, a declaration of the stoic continuation of life in the face of such challenges.
